Our Introduction to Ski Touring Course offers a sound introduction to the world of ski-touring with British Mountain Guides in the quiet resort of Arolla in the Swiss Alps.

Aimed at competent "red run" skiers with some off piste experience. This course is great preparation for day tours, longer tours, the Haute Route, reaching untracked powder and steeper skiing, and for climbers who want to ski to winter routes. You need reasonable fitness (regular hill walking) - all the equipment can be hired locally.

Our 2018 Introduction to Ski Touring course will be guided again by British Mountain Guide, Euan Whittaker. It starts with a briefing on Sunday night (April 1st) with the guided ski touring days being Monday to Saturday and departure on Sunday 8th April.

Our Introduction to Ski Touring Course aims to cover:

  • Equipment - what to choose, and how to use it
  • Avalanche risk assessment
  • Transceiver use
  • Skiing uphill!
  • Off piste skiing skills
  • Skiing on glaciers
  • Navigating on skis
  • Route choice and planning

We take in some classic ski tours in the Val d'Herens area during the week, putting learned skills into practice while enjoying the tranquillity of this area and the fine skiing it offers.

The price includes:

  • 6 days of guided skiing (group ratio maximum 6:1)
  • 6 nights half board valley accommodation in shared twin room (with en suite bathroom)
  • 1 night half board accommodation in hut dormitory
  • all guides expenses

When in the valley we are based at the traditional Hotel Hermitage, Evolene, enjoying British style afternoon teas and evening meals out in local restaurants (included in the price).
