Intro Ice climbing
For a first Alpine ice climbing trip - the course starts with the basics and progresses as fast and as far as you want to go. Previous rock climbing or UK winter experience helps but isn't essential, but ice climbing is hard work so you will need reasonable fitness - and arm strength!
We'll cover:
- Equipment choice.
- Ice climbing techniques.
- Placing ice screws, Abalokov threads other protection.
- Single and multi pitch climbs.
- Abseiling, belaying and ropework.
- Snowshoes for longer approaches.
- Choosing routes, judging conditions, avalanche risk assessment.
- What next? Planning your ice climbing future!
The course is based at the Pension Lac Bleu This is a small friendly hotel within sight of the nearest ice. Within 10 minutes drive there's a choice of ice climbs.
Axes, crampons, helmets, harnesses can be hired.
We'll pick you up from Sion station and drop off at the end of the week. This is an easy 2 hour train journey from Geneva - timetable here
